Caring for "mum" pays off for Luca

GREEN-FINGERED Luca Smith has reaped a £500 cash windfall for his school and a £50 book token for himself in a county-wide gardening competition.

Luca, eight, a pupil of St Catherine's Catholic Primary School, Littlehampton, has won the West Sussex Growers' Association's annual competition to "Grow a Garden Mum".

His chrysanthemum was judged the best out of 1,700 from 22 schools. Children were given their plant in a pot before the end of the summer term, together with care instructions, and had to take it back to school after the holidays.

Each school submitted its best two chrysanthemums for the final judging, and Luca's was reckoned to be the best, based on the number of buds and blooms, its shape and healthy appearance. He was presented with his prize at a school assembly on Monday.

Head teacher Gill Howell said the school would put its money towards a new prayer garden for which funds are now being raised.
