Burner group's concern

Anti-incinerator campaign group DOVE has slammed an East Sussex County Council report which seeks to justify the compulsory purchase order (CPO) of the land at North Quay, Newhaven, for a controversial incinerator that received planning permission last month.

The report claims that the location's isolation from residential property and its position in an area that includes marine wharfs makes it a suitable plot.

But Professor Chris Chatwin, chairman of DOVE, said: 'We object to the report authors speaking about "environmental benefits" when there is provision in the documentation for the incinerator to burn a proportion of industrial as well as municipal waste.

'We also fear that the present prospect of an incinerator burning 210,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year could change since the structure will be so big there may be additional planning applications to burn 500,000 tonnes. A full-scale industrial unit burning material with all sorts of toxins could be ushered in the back door.'
