Only last week I included an appeal for helpers for the Scout Troop and unfortunately, before the paper was printed, we heard of the sudden death of Jonathan Rhodes. Jonathan had been extremely active within the local Scouts movement for some time now and, although confined to a wheel chair, he was always being involved with something to do with them.

He returned to his native Darlington just before Christmas and seemed to be very happy there but, sadly, a long-time re-union with his relatives and friends was not to be.

Tomorrow, Saturday, March 17, Udimore Gardeners invite you to a talk by Dr. Nuala Hancock at Udimore Community Hall ‘On Gardens which have inspired her’. She is a Gold Medal winner at Chelsea and has an extensive background in garden design and history, as well as lecturing in horticulture. The meeting commences at 2.00 pm and admission will be by donations from members or £2.50 for non-members. which will include refreshments. As well as tomorrow, Saturday, March 17, there are two other Coffee Mornings next week. Tomorrow’s will be held in Udimore Community Hall to help raise funds for Udimore’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Then on Thursday, March 22, one will be held at Stocks Oast, Udimore from 10.00 am to 12 noon, the proceeds going to Udimore Community Hall, and the third morning is at Brede Scout Hut on Saturday, March 24, also from 10.00 am to 12 noon, and this will be in aid the Friends of St. George.

For walkers, you can join the Rye & District Association of the National Trust’s next outing on Thursday, March 22, when they have a circular walk starting at 10.30 am from the New Inn, Winchelsea. There is still time to make a contribution towards providing the flowers for the Easter period in St. George’s Church, and have them dedicated to someone that you wish to be remembered. Please send your donation and the dedication to Mrs. Betty May (01424-882667) as soon as possible and by March 25 at the latest. Although the cost is being kept as low as possible, lilies will be £2.25 per stem but donations are at the discretion of the individual person. The list of dedications will be on view on the Church over the Easter period.

Sainsbury’s are running their Active Kids voucher scheme again so any that you get would be welcome at the School. Please drop them in to the School or give to any of the pupils to take in.

The Mobile Library calls again next week on Tuesday, March 20, from 3.00 to 3.40 pm in Oakhill Drive and 3.50 to 4.25 pm in Reedswood Road. It will also be at the Village Hall on Thursday, March 22, from 1.25 to 1.55 pm. Apart from reading books, the Library has audio books as well as access to the internet and reference library.

The final Lent Lunch for this year organised by Brede & Udimore Overseas Missionary Group, will be held at Udimore Community Hall next Wednesday, March 21, from 12 noon till 2.00 pm.

Services at St. George’s Church during the coming week will be the Family Eucharist at 9.30 am on Sunday, March 18 with Holy Communion on Tuesday, March 20, Friday, 23, and Saturday, 24, at 9.00 am and also Wednesday, March 21, at 10.00 am. Parish Intercessions and Compline are on Friday, March 23, from 7.00 to 8.00 pm.

Trinity Church continues at Broad Oak this Sunday, March 18, where the usual service at 10.30 am will be conducted by the Revd. Robin Roberts.
