BREAKING NEWS: Littlehampton postman's alert saves pensioner in flat blaze

A QUICK-thinking postman may well have saved the life of an elderly woman yesterday (Wednesday, October 8).

He heard a smoke alarm, coming from her first floor Furzedown flat, smelt smoke, and promptly phoned West Sussex Fire and Rescue at about noon.

Fire crews from Littlehampton and East Preston forced entry to the flat, to find the woman asleep inside. She was led to safety, and given oxygen by paramedics.

James Diston, of Littlehampton fire station, said the postman's actions were to be commended.

"This is a case that proves that fire alarms save lives," he added.

The property suffered a small amount of smoke damage.
