Contractors for West Sussex County Council have resurfaced the dilapidated stretch of Clun Road and Courtwick Road, which had been given the nickname “boneshaker” by locals, due to the route’s countless potholes.

Labour councillors for Ham ward on Arun and the town council, Tony Squires and Mike Northeast, had been spearheading the action for several years and are now celebrating the response from the county council to take action, last week.

Mr Squires said: “The residents of Clun Road and Courtwick Road are so pleased that the county council has resurfaced these roads at long last.

“Nicknamed locally as ‘Boneshaker Alley’ due to the pot holes, it is good to see that a proper job has been done, rather than just patching.

“Bad weather has caused small pot holes to turn into large pot holes, making the road dangerous.

“We’ve waited a long time for this and doing any job properly is more cost effective and more pleasing to residents.”

Mr Northeast said the move was a welcome step in the right direction, but stressed that a further battle was still to be waged.

“Now we have to keep up the pressure to turn it into a 20mph home zone area before there is a serious accident or fatality. This is something that I know the police support.

“It’s great to have the new road, but we want it to be a safe road,” he said.
