Battle Abbey maths fun

That was the message at Battle Abbey Preparatory School as groups from years 3 '“ 6 competed in a set of timed maths challenges designed to improve both mathematical skill and hand-eye coordination.

The children were given the opportunity to learn maths in a practical way and they all enjoyed getting to grips with the challenges, which ranged from speed cup stacking to number puzzles, via 3-D shape building and tiddlywinks.

"This is a great opportunity for the pupils to get to grips with maths outside a classroom setting," said Ms Sarah Duncan-Broad.

"The children produced some particularly excellent results in the 3-D shape challenge. This sort of project puts the fun back into maths and encourages the pupils to apply the maths they have learnt in the classroom to a practical task.

"We like working with puzzles as it allows students to take risks and fail without penalty. Students no matter their ability level can figure out the solution through a mixture of trial and error and cooperation."

Battle Abbey prep School are holding Open Days on the 19th and 21st of March between 10am and 12 midday.
