AGENCY BACKS PROTESTERS OVER CROSSING DANGERS

LACK of visibility of a puffin crossing near Worthing's Offington roundabout could result in an increased risk of accidents, a Highways Agency audit concluded.

The crossing was installed earlier this year to provide residents and schoolchildren with a safe means of crossing the busy A27. It also included the installation of central islands on the eastern and western side of the A27 Warren Road junction with Offington Avenue.

The audit follows protests by residents and the Findon Valley Society, who claimed that the crossing was an "accident waiting to happen" with traffic unable to see the crossing and also approaching it at inappropriate speeds.

It concluded that there was a limited visibility of traffic signal heads for vehicles exiting Offington Corner roundabout on to Warren Road, which could increase pedestrian accidents and/or nose-to- tail collisions.
