After five motorcycle rider injuries in Sussex this week, police urge drivers be cautious this Bank Holiday weekend

Around 20,000 bikers are expected to descend on Hastings this Bank Holiday Monday for the annual bike 1066 May Day run between 9am and 5pm.

Police are also urging caution with a fine weather forecast predicted this weekend with many motorcycle riders expected to be taking to the road for the first time this Spring.

This week there have been five serious injuries to motorcycle riders in the county, and Sussex Police are asking motorcyclists to look after themselves and drivers to look out for them.

Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, from Sussex Police’s Road Policing Unit, said: “We tend to see a spike in serious injury collisions involving motorbikes around this time of year, especially on fine weekends.

“If you haven’t been out for a while, or even if you have, ride carefully and stay aware.

“Similarly, other road users need to be aware of the Think Bike! message - be mindful of riders and look carefully, especially before turning, exiting junctions or similar manouevres.

“Five riders have suffered broken bones this week in crashes at Hunston, Houghton, Fittleworth, Bognor and Rodmell, near Lewes, and every single one involved a collision with another vehicle.

“So far this year, there have been 219 people killed and seriously injured on the roads of Sussex and motorcyclists account for nearly 18 per cent of these.”
