Eastbourne Airbourne People’s Charity of the Year – Chalk Farm

Three have been put forward and the winner will receive a share of the bucket collection during the four day airshow.

One is Chalk Farm.

Chalk Farm Learning Disabilities Centre is a charity based at Chalk Farm Hotel in Willingdon.

Chalk Farm LDC currently supports 42 adults with learning disabilities and/or autism and has been running for more than 25 years.

A spokesperson at the charity said, “Students attend Monday to Friday with the ultimate goal being that these hard working adults can go out and gain a career in an industry they are passionate about.

“We have had many success stories too, with past students now being paid chefs, waiting staff, reception staff as well as volunteering at the DGH, hospices and more.

“Students train in an array of jobs included hospitality, housekeeping and horticulture. The students work in the hotel and in the gardens of the hotel grounds. They also learn vital independent living skills, grow in confidence and improve social skills. They make friends, develop relationships and understand they are not alone in this world.

“Chalk Farm LDC has recently started new training projects including receptions training, floristry, cookery classes and their biggest project yet – The Secret Garden Project, creating a sensory garden and community area that anyone can take advantage of. It will be a safe, relaxing space to take five minutes from daily life to breathe and appreciate the beauty of nature. The students will be a part of the whole process, from planning to the finishing touches.

“Money is desperately needed to keep up these projects and to expand their training programmes to really get the best out of their students.

“Chalk Farm Hotel is a grade II listed building and the need for repair work is in constant demand.
