Friends of Eastbourne Hospital have set up a crowdfunder to support not only doctors and nurses, but practitioners, porters, cleaning staff and radiographers who are all on the frontline of the fight against coronavirus.

The funds raised will mean staff can request anything, from a supply of food to camp beds to rest in between shifts.

A spokesperson for the Friends said, “This is a really tough time for us all at the moment but particularly for front line NHS staff who are risking their health, and some their lives, to treat us all.

“We have launched an appeal for donations to support the wonderful staff at the Eastbourne DGH, many of whom are working way beyond their contracted hours in their efforts to keep us safe. Some are working shifts that are new to them, often without breaks.”

This comes as the Friends has had to cancel all fundraising events throught spring and summer due to the pandemic.

Its radiotherapy cafe and flower shop have also had to temporarily close, and the trolley rounds to wards have been stopped.

The main shop is open but with reduced hours serving mostly staff, but this may have to close too.

Friends, which has been helping the NHS locally for 72 years, says it is hoping to set up a central hub where staff can go and get supplies.

“Anything they may need to make life a little bit more bearable at work,” the spokesperson said, “Such as a sandwich, snack or drink, they need to keep them as comfortable as possible while working.”

It has set up a Virgin Giving page at www.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/friendsdgh for anyone who wishes to donate.

The charity has already kicked off the appeal by donating £10,000 which was left from a legacy to the Friends solely for the benefit of staff.

Sussex Freemasons has also given £5,000.

“Any donation, however large or small, will be gratefully appreciated,” Friends said, “They all add up to allow us to give some comfort and support to the staff.

“We know that many very generous members of the public are buying things and taking them into the hospital. This is of course a very worthy thing to do but we ask that they consider donating to the appeal so we know that the all staff are getting what they want and need.

“It will also reduce the number of people visiting the hospital. Or if they would rather they can email the Friends to avoid duplication.”
