Continuing the odyssey of a superb vocal group

Top vocal group Odyssey perform at Eastbourne’s Royal Hippodrome Theatre on Thursday, February 27.

The band was one of the most successful soul and disco acts of the ’70s and ’80s. They topped the charts with ‘Use It Up And Wear It Out’ and scored several other Top Ten hits in Britain and throughout the world.

These included: ‘Native New Yorker’, ‘Looking For A Way Out’, ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Going Back To My Roots’, as well as the groove soul anthem ‘Don’t Tell Me, Tell Her’.

A spokesperson said: “The founder and first voice of Odyssey, Lillian Lopez-Collazo Jackson, died of cancer on September 4, 2012, and Louise Lopez passed away from natural causes in January, 2015. Steven Collazo continues the family legacy, taking their ‘odyssey’ forward and further as a brand with an array of talented singers, musicians, DJs and producers.”

Welcome in the Year of the Rat with music and acrobatics

A Chinese New Year Extravaganza takes place at the Devonshire Park Theatre on Saturday, February 15.

Jinlong Culture and Performing Arts brings a spectacular line-up of Chinese acrobatics, music and dance to Eastbourne to welcome in the Year of the Rat (the first in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac).

There will be skilled jugglers, magic, Dragon Dance and live instruments, as well as some ‘playful pandas’, in a show that’s suitable for the whole family.

The fun starts at 2.30pm and tickets cost £18.50-£22.50. Under 16s can get £2 off. A Family Saver (two adults and two children) costs £68. Groups of ten can get an 11th ticket for free. Visit eastbournetheatres.co.uk.

Noteworthy Voices offer a concert for Epiphany

Music for the season of Epiphany – the liturgical period that falls between Christmas and Lent – takes centre stage courtesy of Noteworthy Voices.

The concert is on Saturday (February 15, 7.30pm) at St Mary the Virgin, Eastbourne. Tickets £7 on the door (or email [email protected]). Children free.

Among the programme’s highlights are works by 16th century composers Gregorio Allegri, with his spine-tingling Miserere mei, Deus; Sussex’s own Thomas Weelkes version of When David Heard; and Salvator Mundi by flourishing church musician Thomas Tallis.

Later compositions will also feature in the 90-minute concert, including Antonio Lotti’s Crucifixus, Anton Bruckner’s Christus Factus Est and John Rutter’s Come Down, O Love Divine.

The evening’s sacred delights will be led by musical director Alexander Eadon, a former Kings College, Cambridge chorister and assistant director of music at Eastbourne College.

Alexander said: “The choir are singing some really demanding music exceptionally well, and it’s been a real treat to lead them on a musical adventure with pieces that provide welcome contemplation and sanctuary as we approach Lent.”

A celebration of the best and biggest country stars

Country Superstars – Dolly Parton and Friends is at The Royal Hippodrome, Eastbourne, on Friday, February 28 (8pm).

This unique concert is hosted by Sarah Jayne who has been performing as Dolly Parton for over 25 years and is Europe’s leading tribute to the Queen of Country.

The show also features tributes to Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Billie Jo Spears, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Garth Brooks, John Denver, Glen Campbell and now Canadian country superstar Shania Twain, as well as The Tennessee Allstars Band. Tickets cost £20 on 01323 802020.
