Actor Jack Shepherd who is going to lead a Shakespeare summer school in Seaford

A unique opportunity is being offered in Seaford this summer with the chance to explore Shakespeare with one of Britain’s most respected character actors.

The Shakespeare summer school - from Monday August 1 until Friday August 5 at Seaford Little Theatre in Steyne Road - will feature Wycliffe’s Jack Shepherd who will give unique insight into the world’s greatest playwright.

There will be five days of intensive workshops, culminating in two mini performances of The Tempest and Measure for Measure. There will be a choice of workshops each day. The workshops will be led by Jack and facilitated by professional tutors qualified in theatre and education.

There are now six tutors on board including Padraig Breathnach who specialises in voice and singing. He trained at the English National Opera and has worked as an actor, singer, guitarist and song writer for film and theatre. His latest album included working with Bill Wyman of The Who. Padraig is a composer and teacher of exceptional ability who plans to work on music of the Elizabethan period, having composed a score for Measure for Measure, one of the featured works on the Summer School curriculum.

He will run workshops in Madrigals and singing.

Also there will be Anna Carlisle Haynes, who is an internationally renowned teacher of Laban movement who is currently writing a book on the life and work of Rudolph Laban.

The summer school will focus on making Shakespeare come alive and will incorporate workshops for all disciplines in the theatre, including acting, voice, Laban movement, text interpretation, singing, directing, design, scenic painting and technical skills.

The Shakespeare Summer School is open to applicants over 18, although applicants over 16 will be considered, if relevant experience. All applicants must be fluent English speakers.

The total cost for the week’s course is £375, which includes refreshments. There has been much interest from young people planning to apply to drama schools and in response Seaford Little Theatre is offering anyone under the age of 25 a special discounted price of £320.

A £50 deposit will secure your place with a cheque made out to Shakespeare Summer School. Accommodation is not included but there are many places to stay in and around Seaford, including Air BnB both in Seaford and nearby Newhaven. Seaford Tourist Information Centre can help with this.
