THEATRE: Gripping tale of Land Girls’ determination

Lilies on the Land
Lilies on the Land

FOLLOWING phenomenal success on tour and in London’s West End, the popular play Lilies on the Land is coming to the Devonshire Park Theatre.

This remarkable piece of theatre, celebrating an extraordinary episode in Britain’s history – the Women’s Land Army of World War II, runs from April 12-16.

This gripping but charming tale charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work endless, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the war effort.

But how will these women, hailing from different walks of life, torn from their families and bereft of all basic home comforts, deal not only with the hardships of farming life and the pressures of war, but also with being outsiders in new surroundings?

Maybe work clothes full of mice and toilet rolls falling from the skies are just what it takes for these girls to get through…

Based on hundreds of letters from, and extensive interviews with, original Land Girls and songs from the period, Lilies on the Land reveals the determination of these women with humour and honesty.

Tickets for Lilies on the Land cost from £13.50-£19.50, call 412000.
