Chilling and comic Todd

Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is being performed at the Devonshire Park Theatre from May 29-June 1 by EODS Productions.

The ensemble in this Stephen Sondheim show is made up of citizens of London who, as the lights come up on the opening scene invite the audience to ‘Attend the Tale of Sweeney Todd’ . They continue to appear throughout to comment on the action of the play, through song.

Appearing in the title role is David Morley as Sweeney while Gina Cameron makes her debut with EODS as Mrs Lovett.

On returning to London after being unjustly exiled by the Judge who coveted his wife, Todd seeks revenge. He sets up his barber business above Mrs Lovett’s pie shop where his lust for blood expands to include many of his customers.

He is willingly helped by Mrs Lovett who sees an opportunity to enhance her pies which leads on to a thriving business. The chilling story does have its comedy in song and dialogue although sophisticated and macabre.

Performances at 7.45pm, with 2.30pm matinee on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost £12-£16 , call 412000.
