Celebrating Shakespeare with this re-imagined classic

Shakespeare Country is this year’s outdoor summer play at Eastbourne College and is open to all.

The play is a nod towards the celebrations of Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary currently taking place everywhere from the Globe in London and on television to events at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival and numerous drama activities at local level.

Shakespeare Country re-interprets A Midsummer Night’s Dream and sees Billy Shake (Will Muncey), an American country & western singer accompanied by rhinestone-clad manager Bonny Lee (Ella Virgo) arrive in Stratford.

Their aim is to locate the mythical oak tree beneath which Shakespeare wrote his masterpiece tragedies and romantic comedies. Much like its better-known counterpart, attitudes change, misplaced attraction flourishes and all remains to be put to rights before the end of the play. The play is being performed by Eastbourne College’s lower sixth students and will be directed by the College theatre professional Gavin Robertson, who last year directed Around the World in 80 Days. After the final performance Gavin will head to the USA for a season of July performances prior to producing two shows in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Performances are being held from Wed June 29 to Fri July 1, 8.15pm.

Tickets are £5 available from 01323 452255 boxoffice@eastbourne-college.co.uk
