Ancient verse of Beowulf

Beowulf at Birley Centre
Beowulf at Birley Centre

A contemporary version of the epic tale, combining table-top and shadow puppetry, live music and poetry, is coming to Eastbourne on Monday.

A poet performs the tale in verse, bringing the story to life with a memorable cast of puppet characters, each with their own unique voice and style.

They debate, dance and battle their way through a story about bravery, fame and humanity. Beolwulf is the oldest surviving poem in Old English and was written between the 8th and 11th century, but it is not known by whom. It is set in Scandinavia and tells the story of a heroic warrior. The performance is at the Birley Centre on June 22 7.30pm.
