Organ recital boost for Pevensey church

Toda y (Friday May 15) John Collins, longtime organist at St George’s, Worthing, will give a lunchtime organ recital at St Nicolas Church, Pevensey at 12.30pm.

John’s special interests are early European organ repertoires and he gives recitals and undertakes research. The programme will include pieces by baroque composers including Pachelbel, Frescobaldi and Handel. John also lectures at the Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Organists.

He said: “When these pieces were composed, it was quite normal for the audience to eat and drink whilst listening, and I invite everyone who comes to St Nicolas to do the same. Relax and enjoy!” A lunchtime concert is an innovation at St Nicolas which has hosted evening concerts in recent years, but with the spring weather coming it is hoped this will make for a delightful afternoon in the quiet surroundings of the church, and refreshments will be available afterwards. The church, recently placed on English Heritage’s ‘Heritage at Risk Register’ is raising funds to complete the restoration project begun in 2007. All proceeds will be in aid of the Restoration Fund. The concert is supported by ‘1066 Country’.

Tickets are available from George at 07443227572,, or on the door.
