Celebrate a golden era with live performance from the increasingly popular South Coast Big Band at the Under Ground Theatre tonight (Fri May 27).
Basie & Beyond will feature the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich among others, when the South Coast Big Band takes to the stage for the UGT’s monthly Friday Jazz Night.
Singing this evening is guest vocalist Miss Georgie Collinson who will work her way through the Great American Songbook.
This is a 16-piece band led by trombonist Duncan J Reeks comprising the cream of jazz musicians in our area, who’ve been playing some high profile jazz venues, concerts and festivals.
They include for instance Ken Fordham who has played in West End Shows, recorded with David Bowie, and gigged with Lulu. Ken is also a regular member of the Ross Mitchell Orchestra who recently played at the Royal Albert Hall for the Ballroom Dancing Championships. Pete Cornish’s jazz experience includes studying harmony with Dan Haerle, advanced saxophone technique with Jean Toussaint and musical expression with Gordon Rose.
The South Coast Big Band has a repertoire that also includes Tom Kubis, Thad Jones, Neil Hefti, Sammy Nestico, Lennie Neihaus, Maynard Ferguson, NYJO, Gordon Goodwin, Dave Wolpe, Rob McConnell, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Sarah Vaughan and Diane Schuur.
Big Band music is quite a rarity these days – support these guys tonight and you’re guaranteed an evening to knock your socks off. Tickets cost £12 (UGT members/students £11). Starts at 8pm. Venue opens at 7.30pm.
