Music from the Sofa will be playing at St Andrew’s Church, Alfriston, on Saturday, August 15 from 8pm.
The band is run by Nigel Goss, and features three female singers - Jane Richards, Jacqui Gough, Debbie Moy - drummer Sal Martin, flautist Jasmine Selby, saxophonist Evelyn Harrison and Nigel on keyboards, plus occasional session musicians.
The band is beginning to find itself a wider audience and performs original work but also re-imagined covers with a jazz leaning - The Who’s ‘Can’t Explain’ as a jazz ballad is a favourite - and if the band has a category it is jazz/funk.
The music has good tunes, jazz chords with three part harmony, lively drumming and both ‘through’ composed and improvised instrumental parts. There is a folk influence in that the songs are quite often modal the lyrics have a tales to tell of loss, love and laziness.
Tickets £3 on the door.
