GARDEN Opera is performing La Traviata open air at Herstmonceux Castle on July 24 (7pm).

Hailed as one of the Evening Standard’s Pick of the Best of Summer Opera and number one Critic’s Choice in London’s Time Out, Verdi’s famous opera will be sung in English.

Set in Paris, this universal classic tells the moving story of lonely Violetta’s transformation from a hedonistic courtesan into a tragic heroine.

Fuelled by the unstoppable fire of repression, this production promises to unravel the dark tragedy of Violetta’s poverty, illness and despair in a Mediterranean tour de force.

Here the action is brought forward to a morally ambiguous 1930s Paris with stark design, haute-couture costumes and an exquisite tailor-made score. It is a tale of hope, despair and romantic love at its most eloquent.

Gates open at 5.30pm for picnics. (Bring rugs, cushions or low-backed chairs).

Tickets cost £20, call 834553.
