One of the biggest art events in the south of England stretching from Ditchling to Deal, South East Open Studios celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and over 300 artists will be taking part including local artists Louise Chatfield and Glynis Mockford.

Louise, who describes her oil and mixed-media work as abstract realism, has exhibited in Brighton, the Chalk Gallery in Lewes and her home town of Eastbourne. Although she qualified to study at art school, she was encouraged to get a “proper job”. But she never lost her love of painting and finds constant inspiration in the land and seascapes of Sussex as well as the West Country and Scotland .

Her passion for nature is shared by Glynis, a self-taught artist who was a member of the Society of Eastbourne Artists until “family and life prevented me from pursuing my art until 13 years ago, when I took up my brushes again.” Encouraged by the feedback she got from the public when she took part in SEOS, Glynis re-joined the SEA and won three awards at their annual exhibition last year.

She paints mainly in oil, to express her love of boats, the sea and the natural world with its ever changing moods. Glynis also loves baking, so you can expect a delicious range of home-made cakes at her studio along with a welcoming cup of tea.

The open studio will be at 1 Arundel Close, Pevensey Bay, this weekend from 11am-6pm and Fri June 10, Sat June 11, Wed June 15 and Fri June 17. Admission free; work for sale from £5. Brochures available from the TIC and Towner or go to
