An Eastbourne Festival 2014 exhibition at St Mary’s Church in Victoria Road, Old Town, was brought about by an extraordinary collaboration between artist Harold Mockford and 37 Year Nine students at Cavendish School.
The youngsters studied Mockford’s work, and visited many of the Eastbourne sites he painted, in preparation for this Festival exhibition which is entitled Our Town.
They checked out places like Motcombe Gardens and St Mary’s Church and took photographs before comparing Mockford’s original colour palettes with their own 2013 interpretations.
Inspired by Mockford’s use of colour, each student was then invited to paint a canvas of a place which was important to them and the result is 37 extraordinary paintings - plus preparatory work - which will be on display at St Elisabeth’s Church on each weekend of the Festival (April 19-May 11).
This special exhibition will also include originals by Harold Mockford on loan from Towner and private collections.
A preview was held at the church on Tuesday - attended by Harold and his wife Margaret, his daughter Polly, local artist Victoria Brook and councillor Carolyn Heaps.
This is a rare opportunity to see five original Mockfords and the students’ paintings. The exhibition will open each weekend from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.
