Rivals share spoils after nail-biting end

There was a nervous ending in store for both DPB Eastbourne and Polegate and Stone Cross in their Division Four clash on Saturday.

In the final stages, the result was on a knife’s edge with both sides still on the verge of victory, but neither could cross the finish line and the match ended in a draw.

Polegate won the toss and elected to bowl, sending Duncan Ray and Richard Home to the crease. The latter fell for three to set the score on 13-1.

However, Ray and Martin Hanmer put on an impressive 60 for the second wicket - that of Ray for 24.Hanmer fell not long after for a swift 35, introducing Baldwin to the crease alongside David Beck.

The pair stepped up to the plate and pushed Eastbourne’s tally up to 231-3 and they declared with Beck and Baldwin on an unbeaten 63 and 77 respectively.

Polegate’s reply faltered at first with Stuart Conroy falling to set the score at 1-1.

However, an impressive 80 from Siraj Mashood rescued his side’s innings and they were on 123-5 before he fell.

Stuart Tibble and Liam Conroy put on 90 for the sixth wicket before the lower order crumbled, thanks to five wickets from Baldwin, to set the visitors on 225-9. Polegate were chasing just seven runs for the win while Eastbourne needed one more wicket to snatch victory. Neither came and spoils were shared between the local rivals.
