Eastbourne’s Johanna Konta progressed to the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.

Konta, 25, overcame her opponent Monica Puig in a rain interupted match on court one 6-1, 7-5.

It was a tricky draw for the British No.1 as Puig, like Konta, had recently reached the semi-finals at Eastbourne.

Konta served superbly breezed through the first set yesterday and was 2-1 up in the second when rain suspended play.

The rain continued to fall in SW19 today and the duo finally re-started on Wednesday afternoon and Konta closed out the match as she broke Puig’s serve in the final game of the second set.

Konta said, “It was a tricky first round. She was playing very well on grass and I had to be there for every point. It was tricky for both of us with the rain delays. I’m happy I was able to stay focused, stay present and not panic and not rush.

“I’m very happy with my serve and return. It’s important to get the upper hand early in the point on grass. I’m really looking to dictate out there.”
