The fourth round of the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country league events was held at Pett village organised by Hastings Runners.

The five mile testing course saw over 200 competitors tackling muddy woodland tracks and a number of soggy fields all made more difficult with recent heavy rain but thankfully weather conditions on the day although cold did provide some morning sunshine.

Hailsham Harriers who were in second place after the earlier rounds to Lewes AC were out to close the gap and with a tremendous effort from all saw the Harriers take the overall win by only three points to close in with two events to come.

The squad saw twenty two storming off into the woods and after the five miles it was Gary Judges who appeared into the final field first to take a most impressive win from Hastings Runners’ Stuart Piper by 14 seconds. Excellent support came from all the other Harriers in an impressive team effort.

Positions: Graham Purdye 31st and Giles Bowmer 40th to pile on the points. The combined race with the ladies which was won by Sarah Roff Hastings AC (10th overall) produced great results with Harriers Sue Fry second (21st overall) Alissa Ellis third (27th overall) Liz Lumber fourth (32nd overall) and Cat Bounds sixth (45th overall).

The team winners are calculated with an overall lowest score and the performance saw Hailsham finish with 657points from Lewes 678 and Hastings AC third 974points. The next round will be held on Sunday, February 1.
