A young Eastbourne windsurfer is helping to inspire more young people to get involved and progress in windsurfing after being selected as a new Royal Yachting Association Team15 Ambassador.

Luke Williams, who sails for the Spray Sprites Windsurfing Club based in Eastbourne, was among 16 youngsters from the RYA Zone Squads officially awarded with their Team15 Ambassador certificates at the RYA’s Easter Camp in Weymouth.

As part of Spray Sprites, the 15-year-old gets to learn new skills and develop under the guidance of specialist RYA coaches. Luke is also all part of the RYA’s South East Zone squad on the pathway to Olympic classes sailing.

As Team15 ambassador, he will help to promote Team15, the RYA Pathway and the RYA Zone Squad Programme. He will also become a point of contact for other young sailors who may need advice about how to move forward in the sport. He is also part of the Olympic sailing pathway.

Gillian Wright, RYA National Windsurfing Development Officer, explains: “The role was created to recognise windsurfers who play an important part in the education of other T15 sailors, many of whom are new to windsurfing and competition. The Ambassadors are hugely enthusiastic and have all shown they are willing to share their skills and knowledge.”

Team15 is the RYA’s youth windsurfing development programme helping to make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to kids aged 15 and under. Fun and informal Team15 sessions are held weekly, kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the sessions are reasonably priced.

The Team15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer, adding a competitive edge for those keen to hone their skills.
