The Eastbourne Edge skate hockey team finished fourth in the National U19 Championships and qualified to play in the European Championships in Delmont, Switzerland August 18th-19th.

In Switzerland, the team will play against the best skate hockey teams in Europe.

Eastbourne Edge began life as a school club nearly a decade ago.

It was set up by a small number of keen teachers from Ratton School who were interested in bringing this ‘new’ and exciting sport to the youngsters of the school.

Training took place weekly in the playground before moving indoors for the winter months.

Its popularity grew and within a couple of years, training moved to a bigger venue nearby at Cavendish School sports centre.

With other schools joining in the decision was made to enter the South East Skate Hockey Association (SESHA) League.

Nervous and inexperienced, the players played their first competitive league games in Hastings in 2005, losing every match each week in their first season.

Undeterred they progressed to become proud winners of the SESHA league and now regularly qualify to compete in the National Finals.

Eastbourne Edge is now an independent club in its own right, run by volunteers with a passion for hockey.

Eastbourne Edge have also organised a number of community-based events for younger children, promoting sport and fitness.

The U12s have already established a strong lead in the 2012 SESHA League and this year the club has entered two teams in the U15 SESHA League and they are currently in first and second place.

Two years ago the club started a senior team that is slowly strengthening and getting closer to the other established teams in the SESHA Senior league.

The club is very proud that this year for the first time a team qualified to play in the European Championships.

The U19 team players are looking forward to playing against the best teams in Europe at the tournament in Switzerland.

Eastbourne Edge train at Cavendish Sports Centre – new players are always welcome.
