Superb 66 helps Jarvis to Eastbourne junior golf title

Willingdon golfer Calvin Jarvis is the new Eastbourne Junior Golf Champion.

Hosted at Willingdon, Calvin carded a superb gross 66 in the opening round and followed it up with a 73 for a total of 139.

The runner-up was Ben Jones, also from Willingdon, with gross scores of 69 and 72 for a total 141.

The Handicap Winner with nett scores of 65 and 71, total 136 was Callum Strachan of East Sussex National and Willingdon.

Handicap runner-up was Davis Jones of the Nevill Golf Club with nett scores of 72 ad 68, total 140.

In the seniors 68 golfers from Kent, Surrey and Sussex travelled to Willingdon for the seniors annual invitation day.

The winners were: Colin Wood (Willingdon) and Andy Goddard (Highwoods) They won on countback from Rodger Savage (Willingdon) and Paul Seagar (Eltham Warren) Both teams scored 48 points. Third place went to: Dereck Smith (Willindon) and Bernard Duncan (Royal Eastbourne) on 47 points. In 4th place with 46 points came Des Cleal (Willingdon) John King (Lamberhurst)

After lunch, Dave Gellatly, Willingdon’s seniors vice captain and principal organiser of the day, thanked all of those who attended and gave special thanks to those members of the organising team who helped throughout the day.

The Willingdon Ladies Morwenna Salver texas scramble was won by Katie Reid, Rachel Holmes and Jane Dallaway.In second place were Kim Hepburn, Joy Campbell and Sandy Gasston.

The silver division ladies 36-hole scratch Championship was won by Sara Whittaker and just behind was Mary Scott, who fought off Linda Coomber in third.

Bronze division winner was Sue Horsford and runner-up was Carol Woods. Meanwhile, the Summer Salver was won by Mary Scott with a gross 78, net 67. Linda Coomber claimed second with 82, net 71 and Jane Price third with 89 net 73.

Eastbourne Park GC Ladies 27-hole Club Championship was won by Cherry Benzmann with a gross 143. Di Morris was second with gross 146. Kim Rees was the net winner with 93. Longest Drive on the third: Sue Bell; nearest pins second and ninth: Cherry Benzmann. 6th: Jan Wright.

Ladies Stableford: The winner of the Ladies Monthly Stableford was Jan Wright with 36 points. Margaret McBain achieved 32 to come second. Di Morris returned 31 as did Sue Bell. Nearest the Pins: Jan Wright captured the 6th and 9th and Viv Osbourne the 2nd.

Seniors Section, 3 Clubs + Putter: Steve Taylor returned a 42 points with Ralph Richardson only one back to come second. Alf Beney and acting seniors captain, Chris Mottershead both returned 40 points with Alf declared third on count back.

ROYAL EASTBOURNE’S Teresa Ward won the the Commemoration Tankard in last week’s Stableford Competition.

Playing off six, Teresa took first prize with a score of 38 points. Just one point away was Dawn Chalcroft, who received the replica trophy. Christine Cunliffe was third on 36 points.

On one of the windiest and wettest days seen at the Royal in August, Mark Taylor won the Hartington Gold Medal with a gross 72, two shots better than runner-up Steve Clarke.

Alistair Wadsworth took the College Cup with net 70 - one shot better than Richard Ager.

The Ougham Owls foursomes trophy was won by Doug and Viv Newman with 36 stableford points.

Lady captain Wendy Goodman, paired with Toby Anderson, equalled the score but lost on countback.
