Smith sinks colours to inflict Glastonbury’s first defeat

Division one leaders Glastonbury B crashed to a surprise 3-2 away defeat to HMI Rutherfords.

This is the first match the Glastonbury B team have lost this season following 23 straight wins.

Dave Crouch for Rutherfords got his team off to a great opening by defeating Spencer Dain 52-9, Martin Holmes for the leaders beat Damien Hilder 54-35 and Matt Bray out-pointed Dave Relf 67-32 with the aid of a 32 break. Paul White for the home team overcame Paul Grimes 57-39.

The match was tied at two frames apiece, before Dave Smith, the Rutherfords captain, drew Ben Dain. Dave needed to take the last five colours to claim the win which he did with a 25 clearance break to record a 58-56 victory.

Dolphin A lying in second position were the visitors at the Angling Club to face the A team.

Angling got off to a good start by taking the opening two frames, Dave Wilkinson defeated Paul Binks on the Black 53-49 and the Angling A captain Richard Anderson saw off Mark Crotty 59-47. Phil White for Dolphin got his team back in the match with a 58-26 win against James Blackmar and Neil Sivyer out-pointed Alan Carvil 68-21 with the aid of a 47 break.

Nik Driver overcame Peter Lavington in the final frame 84-46 to win the frame and match for the Dolphin A 3-2.

Hailsham MI C derby match against their own A team resulted in a 4-1 win for the C team.

Lee Mathews, Jack Lander (62 break) Pete Watson, and Matt Barnes recorded the winning frames for the C team. Mark Sciancalepore, the A team captain, prevented the whitewash with a 57-36 win over Ash Bull.

Seaford Con Club were the visitors at the Glastonbury Club to take on the F team. The Con Club won 5-0 thanks to victories from Sean Payne, Nick Cox, Andy Coe, Mick Walsh and Gary Cooper.

Nuthouse B got back to winning ways with a 3-2 home victory over Bollards.

The match was decided on the final frame with Barry Pugh outpointing the Bollards captain Mike Ashcroft in emphatic style 54-4 to take the frame and match.

Mark Saunders, the captain of Polegate Legion A, pocketed a 44 break during his frame win against Martin Wright of Workingmens A to record a 85-60 victory.

Paul Pickett defeated Pete Abbotts 74-60 and Shaun Murphy overcame Brian Bearn 55-47 to record the 3-2 win for the Legion team. Trevor Binks and Chris Bearne had the two points for the Workers.
