Eastbourne Rugby Club chairman Fraser Brook hailed the generous spirit of rugby following a recent break-in at their Park Avenue clubhouse.

Thieves caused thousands of pounds worth of damage following the second break-in in six months.

The intruders kicked in doors, stole beer and spirits from the bar and a wide screen TV from the clubhouse. A collection after last week’s home victory against Crowborough helped raise much-needed funds to repair the damage. Visiting team Crowborough also whipped round to raise cash and the referee donated his match fee to help the cause.

Brooks said, “Crowborough played great and then had a whip round for us. They are a great bunch. The referee also donated his match fee, it’s a special sport this rugby.”
