Eastbourne’s Johanna Konta suffered a straight sets 6-3, 6-2 defeat in Great Britain’s opening rubber in the FED Cup in Argentina.
Konta, making her singles debut for Britain, was first on versus Paula Ormachea in the BNP Paribas World Group II promotional play-off tie.
The 21-year-old, born in Australia to Hungarian parents but now lives in Eastbourne, looked nervous against Ormachea who is ranked 21 places above Konta at 143.
Ormachea, 20, reached a WTA final in Bogota earlier this year and played some solid tennis as she raced into a 4-0 lead at the Parque Roca.
Konta pulled one break back but the Argentine rattled off the first set and sealed victory in one-hour and 12 minutes.
Laura Robson was next on court for Britain and was set to take on world number 224 Florencia Molinero.
