No play-offs as Eastbourne Eagles settle for fifth place Elite League finish

EASTBOURNE Eagles’ speedway season has ended with the team just missing out on the play-offs and having to settle for fifth spot in the Elite League.

With the Eagles sitting out the final evening on racing on Wednesday night, the Sussex club slipped out of the top four following their weekend defeat at Birmingham, dashing hopes of second successive tilt at the Elite League title.

There will be no further speedway meetings at Arlington this season.

The Elite League Riders’ Championship will be on October 20 at the Abbey Stadium, Swindon. Eastbourne’s representative will be Joonas Kylmakorpi and possibly Simon Gustafsson.

On the social front, the club’s end-of-season dinner dance is on Friday, October 26, at the Langney Sports Club in Priory Lane, Eastbourne. Tickets are available from or by contacting Shona at Dugards on 01273 732286.

The club has thanks fans for their support this season. Co-promoter, Mike Bellerby, said: “On behalf of Bob Dugard, Trevor Geer and myself, I want to thank the people on the terraces who have backed our campaign this year.

“A special thank you goes to the band of fans who support us away from home. We all know the costs in both time and money and their efforts are much appreciated.

“The riders were not able to say their thanks to supporters in the usual way because of the way our fixtures ended. However, they have all asked the club to thanks the fans for their enthusiastic support throughout the whole season.”
