Newton to help Blue & Golds exact Hove revenge

Scrum half James Newton looks set to make his debut as Eastbourne Rugby Club look to exact revenge upon Hove at Park Avenue on Saturday (3pm).

In a low-scoring encounter back in November, Hove beat Mal Chumbley’s men 5-0.

However, with Newton’s arrival coupled with improved form from his existing players, Chumbley believes his side can put on a decent show for the home supporters.

Eastbourne remain hopeful of sneaking that last play-off spot in the Sussex Spitfire League Division One but Chumbley is all to aware his men can afford no more slip-ups.

They are third in the table after 16 games on 55 points.

Pulborough are the runaway leaders on 81 points but second placed Crawley remain within reach on 63 points.

The Blue and Golds also have to face both Crawley and Pulborough before the end of the season.

Chumbley said, “I was encouraged by last weekend’s victory against Chichester. Hove are a different proposition but I feel we can make up for the defeat.

“It was a strange game , we camped in their half for most of that match but just couldn’t convert.”

Of Newton, Chumbley added, “James looks as though he will add something to the team. He has good leadership and will add an element of control around the breakdown.”

Steff Cousins, so impressive last weekend against Chichester, misses the match with a knee problem.
