Hine seals a remarkable Royal golf comeback

Royal Eastbourne golfers staged a fine comeback against a Sussex under-18 squad last week.

Things didn’t bode well for the Royal at the outset, Brad Manton and Matt Wilson’s halved game against Matt Greenfield and the youngsters’ captain, Josh Glossop.

This was followed by a 5 & 3 loss by Mark Taylor and Tom Breach. Alex Piper and Jordan Baker edged home one up for the Royal, but losses by Nick Ward and Hamish

Houston and the Richard Hine/Rob Bain pairings saw the visitors lunch holding a lead of 3& 1/2 - 1& 1/2.

With the 10 singles now deciding matters, Hamish Houston reduced the visitors’ lead, beating Josh Glossop 3 & 2, only for Alex Piper to go down 6&5 to Matt Greenfield.

Things looked to be favouring the visitors when Dan Godwin beat Brad Manton 2-up and Nick Ward then lost 3&1 to James Lelliott, putting the County 6.5 to 2.5 in the lead.

Mark Taylor, for the Royal, halved with Harry

Bayley, leaving five matches to decide matters. The Royal then won all of these, with Matt Wilson winning “out in the country”, beating Jared Perks 6&4.

Tom Breach v Calvin Harris’ match was a close-run thing, Tom got home 1 up. Jordan Baker’s

4&2 win over Chris Stoneham was followed by Rob Bain’s 4&3 match against Tom Bailey. Richard Hine sealed things for the Royal when he got home by with a 10 & 8 defeat of James Holden. This left the final score-line 8-7 in the home side’s favour.

With the Sussex scratch knock-out matches to be played on April 27, the Royal face Chartham Park.
