Gildredge Park Bowling Club in Eastbourne is the first sports club to be awarded Clubmark accreditation by Active Sussex.

It has been recognised for ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for potential bowlers, for both outdoor lawn bowls and indoor short-mat bowling.

Clubmark is a universally acknowledged cross sport accreditation scheme for community sports clubs.

It shows that a club provides the right environment which ensures the welfare of members and encourages everyone to enjoy sport and stay involved throughout their lives.

Frank Eveleigh, the Gildredge Park Bowls Club Chairman said: “We are delighted to be the first bowls club in Sussex to achieve Clubmark accreditation status.

“This achievement recognises the fantastic work by our coaches and volunteers who make this a club to be proud of.”

Brett Crowhurst, Development Manager from the Bowls Development Alliance said, “The Club is to be congratulated on achieving their Clubmark accreditation status which highlights the excellent work that is taking place at the Gildredge Park Bowling Club.”

Active Sussex has recently become licensed by Sport England to award Clubmark status to sports clubs. Anthony Statham, Sport Development Manager at Active

Sussex, said “Active Sussex was delighted to support Gildredge Park Bowling Club through the Clubmark process.

“They have demonstrated a real commitment to developing their club and delivering high quality opportunities for people in their community”

Since starting the Clubmark accreditation process, the club has applied to Sport England Inspired Facilities for funding to extend their clubhouse.

This will enable the club to provide a much safer catering area for the large numbers of visiting touring teams who come every year, and provide space for a second short mat, allowing more members to play during the winter and allow entry into county leagues for this increasingly popular sport.

Anyone looking to take up the sport of bowling will be given a warm welcome at Gildredge Park Bowling Club who are always looking for new members, and offer newcomers the chance to take part in ‘Bowls 4 Fun’ sessions, with a coach available to provide useful hints and tips.
