Meads Lawn Tennis 16 and under boy’s team ended 2013 on a high at the LTA Tennis Sussex Awards last month.

The team picked up the Fair Play of the Year award at the Amex Stadium in Brighton after showing sportsmanship, courage and determination during the past 12 months.

Head Coach Ollie Miller was understandably delighted with the boys’ achievement, “They have all worked extremely hard and thoroughly deserve this award, I couldn’t be happier for them”, he said.

Led by Captain Joel Lock, the team comprised Callum Lock, Tristan Ledger, Daniel Thomas, Theo Kendrick, Ryan Carter and Elliot Brown.

It was the first time in the club’s history that a junior team competed in the LTA’s AEGON Team Tennis Leagues and to add extra competitive experience, they organised regular friendly matches against local rivals, Hampden Park.

Back in April, the boys completed their LTA Tennis Leaders Course under the guidance of Ollie and many of the team’s members assist with the club’s junior coaching programme.

In addition to this, Callum is autistic and has cerebral palsy, however, despite these constraints, his enthusiasm has never diminished and the team always support him.

Club President Mary-Pat Rose was in attendance at the Amex and was honoured to see the boys pick up their winning trophies.

“Wins are hard to come by for any team new to competition but this never dampened the boys’ enthusiasm for the game.

“Many of the team members assist the coach with mini tennis classes and play at adult club sessions.”
