Eastbourne Hockey Club have already come a long way since last season - a fact that was highlighted by their disappointment after a 2-1 defeat to Spencer last weekend.
When last year, the club were happy to pick up a point against then high-flying Spencer, higher expectations meant David Adelston’s men were despondent not to get anything from the side when they traveled there on Saturday.
Adelston said, “They’re not as strong as they were last year and we are more organised, so we were a bit disappointed not to get a result.
“We started very well and were 1-0 ahead after just five minutes thanks to a tremendous goal by Steve Perry, set up by Andy Edwards. Unfortunately, we let the opposition get back into the game.
“We didn’t create quite enough chances. I think the opposition were good at keeping the ball and blocking us off, but didn’t create that many chances themselves.
“The coach and I both felt we were the stronger side but we just didn’t take advantage of what we had.”
This weekend, Eastbourne host an Oxford Hawks side who are enjoying relative success in the Premier Division after promotion from Division Two last year.
They currently lie seventh in the table - one place and one point behind Eastbourne.
Adelston said, “We played them a couple of times when we were both in Division Two and they’re a very organised side.
“It will be a great game.”
Eastbourne kick off at 13:30 at The Saffrons and welcome spectators to support the club.
