Eastbourne Eagles fell at the final hurdle in their bid to be crowned Elite League speedway champions – crashing 98-85 on aggregate to Poole Pirates.
The Arlington Stadium outfit led from the home leg going into last night’s clash at Poole’s Wimbourne Road but they could not hold onto the eight point head start – losing 57-36 on the night.
Eastbourne’s lead was wiped out by the fourth heat and from then on the Pirates never looked like surrendering their advantage.
Eastbourne manager Trevor Geer said, “We gave it a go tonight.
“But, even when we were making the gate, we seemed more concerned with where the Poole riders were, rather than riding our own race.”
