Brendan Johnson is the second name on the Eastbourne Eagles team-sheet for the 2015 season. It follows the announcement last month of the first signing, Danny Warwick, who is the current UK sand racing champion.
Johnson, 22, lives in Poole – as does Warwick - and has ridden for most clubs at the lower league level.
He added: “For my age I have had a relatively long speedway career already. I started when I was 13. I have ridden for various different clubs at various levels.”
He rode for Somerset in the Premier League and had outings for Poole last season in the Elite League.
Johnson sustained a serious head injury and it has been a long road back to fitness.
He said: “I was in a coma on life support in 2009 from a crash at the Isle of Wight. Since then I struggled to get back to form and had life coaching.
“Last year I knuckled down and got my points back to where they needed to be. I feel I can push on this year.”
Johnson is familiar with Arlington and has been to the track this winter for the Sunday practice sessions.
He said: “I used to ride there as a junior, week in week out, when I was on a 125cc bike, so I know the place. So when it gets down to the racing and hard lines I know I can do the job.
“I feel over the moon to be at Arlington. I am here to put the experience into play this year and push on from that.”
Johnson, who won the Under 19 title in 2010, has also won the National League Trophy, the National Fours and the National Pairs.
Club chairman, Martin Dugard, said, “Brendan is a winner and that’s the sort of rider we aim to recruit for Eastbourne. He has won titles and trophies and that’s what we will be aiming to do. We have made a good start to team building. I am sure the fans will like the team. There are exciting times head in 2015.”
