Polegate & SC U10 252-3

Heathfield Park 235-4

Polegate & Stone Cross U10 captain James Earl won the toss and opted to bat first. Polegate & SC’s Sussex East Area U8 representative Henry Durtnall top scored and got off to a great start with a couple of boundaries including a straight drive in his 9 not out, Anthony Bundy also showed plenty of aggressive intent with his seven not out, including a lovely cover drive.

Other batting highlights included a cultured six not out by Ben Berry, another of Polegate & SC’s Sussex East Area U8 players. Chasing 253 to win, Heathfield Park were pegged back by disciplined bowling from Sam Williams and Jack Corbett. Alex Haffenden also bowled with aplomb.

A strong bowling performance was capped off by Freddie Bobbin’s beguiling leg spin (2 wickets for 7 runs off 3 overs) and Henry Durtnall’s hostile fast bowling (1 wicket for 4 runs off 2 overs).

Polegate and Stone Cross U11 264-8,

Hellingly U11 261

Polegate & Stone Cross Cricket Club U11 narrowly beat local rivals Hellingly in this eagerly-awaited soft ball pairs cup match. In blustery conditions, Hellingly inserted their opponents.

However, the skill and focus shown by the Polegate players shone through and dogged defence and good running were the two key factors in posting a creditable 264 for 8 off 20 overs in the face of some skilful and accurate bowling by Hellingly. Josh Levett (12) and Tom Carpenter (11) were among the key contributors.

Enthusiastic and effective fielding by Polegate then helped restrict Hellingly’s first pair to a net five runs off the first four overs.

In the face of accurate spin bowling by William Lucas (3 for 7) and captain Stanley Bobbin (3 for 5), the last Hellingly pair were left requiring six off the final over to win.

Bobbin with his measured leg breaks restricted the batsmen to only three, and a great three run win by Polegate was sealed.
