Crews battle gusts as Regatta season begins

The 2013 Coastal Regatta season has started for Eastbourne Rowing Club with events in Dover, Bexhill and Folkestone, with another seven Regattas ahead in the coming months.

A number of crews represented the club at Dover and the following day at Bexhill, enjoying varied success.

In Dover, the Junior Under-16 quad sculls and Junior Senior four came second, with the Ladies Junior pair achieving a respectable third place.

Bexhill Regatta had mixed fortunes for the club, with a second novice win for Matt Whitehead in the single sculls, elevating him to Junior sculler status.

The rest of the crews secured a number of final and top three places throughout the day.

A selection of crews from the club travelled to Folkestone last weekend, where they endured a very windy and rough time.

However, despite the poor conditions, the Junior Senior crew of Nick Norwood, David Whines, Alan Warland and Chris Warland, with Lucy Wright coxing, battled hard to take first place - a whole boat length ahead of the second-placed crew of Dover.

Unfortunately, the Eastbourne Regatta had to be postponed due to high seafront winds last Saturday.

It has now been rescheduled to Sunday, 23 June (weather dependent), with crews from 10 clubs set to compete on a two kilometre course between Eastbourne Rowing Club ( by Fishermen’s green) and the Pier.

The racing starts at 10am and continues until 4pm.
