Eastbourne golfer Maria Tulley was narrowly beaten to the top spot in her second WPGA event at Salisbury and Wiltshire Golf Club.

Tulley was in the lead and heading for victory with a -1 after shooting a round of 72.

However, a -3 score in the final group meant she had to settle for second spot overall and second place in the order of merit.

She said, “I played steady throughout the round but my chipping could have been a lot better. I could not fault my driving off the tee as I did not miss a fairway.”

The result was one place better than her performance in the opening WPGA event of the calendar year when she finished third in Manchester last week.

The golfer is now hoping the improvement trend continues so she can claim top spot at her next event at Chesterfield Golf Club on June, 8.

Borough Trophy: Eastbourne Downs golfers Warren Poll and Steve Woods triumphed in the popular Borough Trophy Open held at Eastbourne Downs Golf Club last weekend.

It was a close encounter that saw the lead change hands numerous times over the course of the day, with eventual winners Poll and Woods coming from +6 at the half way stage to take the honours with an eventual score of +14.

The Borough Trophy is one of Eastbourne’s oldest Open competitions and attracts golfers from across the town and further afield, all trying to tackle the testing format of 36 hole four ball better ball to win the coveted trophy.

Brothers Callum and Seb Dell had raced into a first half lead with the best morning score of +7. However, competitors came out strongly in the second half of play, resulting in a close final leader board.

Former Downs members Mark Wooton and Kevin Redmond came in third place with an eventual score of +11. Just in front of them came the pairing of Gary Rid and Ben Ward, both recent additions to the Downs membership, who finished on +12, two behind first placed duo Poll and Woods. The winning pair were awarded their trophy by Eastbourne Downs Club Captain John Boniface.

Willingdon Ladies held their annual mixed competition, the Stella Haffenden Salver, last weekend.

Jane Jones and Tony Uden secured first place with 47 points on a very warm but windy day last Sunday.

Nearly 50 men and women played in this Greensomes competition, with Jean Uden and John Payne claiming the runner-up spot on 43 points. Third and fourth place were not far behind with Sandra Hendrie and Oli Hayes just pipping Sylvia Huggair and Ray Callaghan to third place with a score of 42 points over 40.
