Birthday celebrations arrive early for Peter

Peter Reynolds, whose birthday it is this week, must have thought it had come early when he got off to a flying start against Derek Dyer in the Men’s Club Singles Semi-Final.

In the lead after five ends 10-2, Peter increased his lead to 15-6 after 10. Derek then staged a dramatic fight back scoring 1,2,2,2,4,2 to take the lead 19-15. However this was to no avail as Peter scored 4,2 to win a place in the Final 21-19.

The in-form and past Champion John Pannett reached the final when he defeated Alan Glenister in the other semi. John led 9-2 after 10 ends and 15-6 after 15 ends, going on to win 21-11.

Past Champion Sue Taylor played Anne Summers in the Ladies Club Singles semi-final and got off to a solid start to lead 9-2 after five ends. Anne fought back to two shots behind 9-11 after ten ends, Sue went on to win a place in the final 21-11. The other semi was between Rosemary Burgin and Sue Green. Rosemary made the better start and led 11-6. Rosemary went on to reach the final with a fine 21-13 win.

It was an inter family battle in the Mixed Pairs semi-final when husband and wife David and Pat Bain played Mother and son Pat and Jamie White. The Whites led 12-8, but the Bain’s fought back over the next five ends to lead 17-14. Leading 26-20 with an end to play, Dave and Pat nearly threw it away when they dropped a five on the last end to record a fine 26-25 win.

The other semi saw men’s club partners Ray Novis and Ian Coombes play against each other. Ray was partnered by Sheila Morris and Ian with Maureen Stanbridge, Ray and Sheila led 12-10. Maureen and Ian finished with a flourish scoring to snatch a fine win 17-14.

In the Men’s Veteran Pairs semi-final, Dave Webber and Tony Huggett got off to a fine start against Peter Reynolds and Dave Booth when they led 13-12. Putting in a good finish Dave and Tony recorded a very good win 19-14. Meanwhile Ray Novis and Ian Coombes showed all their experience when they played Harry Arnold and Bob Elliott. They went on to win 20-6 when Harry and Bob conceded,
