Eastbourne Eagles slender hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Elite League play-offs finally disappeared following a comprehensive 56-34 defeat at Birmingham Brummies on Thursday evening.

Having been overhauled in the table by Peterborough, their hosts on the previous Monday, the Sussex management were surely hoping for better at Perry Barr, on a track which they excelled in season 2011.

Indeed it began so well, the Eagles took an early six point lead after only two races and with guest Nicolai Klindt (replacing the absent Timo Lahti), Denis Gizatullin, Lewis Bridger and Lukas Bridger all securing early wins the signs looked rosy.

They held onto the initiative until heat seven but maximum points to the Brummies pulled them level in the eighth.

After that, and somewhat inexplicably, it was all one way traffic, the home side for whom both Bjarne Pedersen and Sebastian Ulamek both hit the dozen point mark.

They never lost another heat, securing no fewer than five 5-1’s and three 4-2’s from the remaining eight races to win at a canter and go above the Sussex side into the Elite League top four, thus ending Eagles own aspirations for play-off progression.
