The highlight of the Hampden Tennis Club finals day came in a tightly-contested mixed doubles competition.

Belinda Marsh and John Portway ground down Ann Stone and Alan Mitchell in a tense three hour match 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Mitchell, though, had a second final to play, in the men’s B doubles alongside Tyrone Bruce, against the hard-hitting duo of Colin Guyton and Grant Tarrant-Fisher. Guyton and Tarrant-Fisher proved too strong, and claimed the title 6-0, 6-1.

Bruce, despite his defeat in the adult competition, still came away a triple winner, as he took the 18 & under mixed singles, 14 & under boys’ singles title, and the junior doubles titles.

The most anticipated match-up of the day saw Ara Matirossian and Ian Brown-Little take on serial winners Stuart Hobden and Wayne Peacock in the men’s A doubles. Martirossian and Brown-Little despite their effort, were unable to take the title from the experienced duo as they lost 6-1, 7-5.

Hobden previously competed in the singles A final, where he defeated Richard Ellis 6-2, 6-2.

The men’s singles B title went to youngster Dan Banks who overcame Mark Wilders 6-2, 7-5.

The ladies’ doubles title was claimed by Kim Reed and Marion Wallace who won in 3 sets, against Belinda Marsh and Sharon Head - who retired due to an injury.

In the junior events, Aidan Brown was the winner in the 10 & under boys’ singles. Caitlin Neilan took the 8 & under girls’ singles, while Zacharay Gar won the 8 & under boys’ singles. Jack Usher claimed the 6 & under boys’ singles title.
