British number-one Andy Murray believes Eastbourne’s Jo Konta has the potential to go ‘very high’ following her superb run at the US Open.
Konta, 24, has won 15 consecutive matches and has reached the fourth round of the US Open.
Along the way she has beaten world No.9 Garbiñe Muguruza and top 20 player Andrea Petkovic.
She was ranked 97 before the US Open but will leave New York with a ranking in the 60s and she needs just another 17 ranking points to topple Heather Watson as the British No.1.
Murray, speaking after his latest victory at the Flushing Meadows, said, “Even with the struggles closing out (against Petkovic) she managed to get there and that’s a very good sign.
“She has obviously been on an excellent run lately and is very close to being the number-one in Britain.
“That kind of shows how high she could get which is exciting. Beating two players like Petkovic and Muguruza would suggest she has the potential to go very high if she continues on the right path and that’s very, very exciting.”
Of her recent good form Konta added, “It’s a combination of things and it’s a progression of things. I have a really good team around me I’m very fortunate with that and I feel very blessed.
They are a good, positive influence on me and helping me to keep things in perspective. I’m just really enjoying the journey that I’m on with the good and the bad.”
