Feliciano Lopez successfully defended his AEGON International sigles title with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6, 5-7 victory against Richard Gasquet.
Lopez was delighted to beat the number-one seeded Frenchman Gasquest in just over two hours and provided some consolation for his painful loss in the final at Queens last week to Grigor Dimitrov.
Lopez however, will be unable to make it an Eastbourne hat-trick as this was the last year the AEGON International will include a mens competition.
Lopez, who kissed the Eastbourne court after victory, said, “To win two times in a row is such a difficult task so I’m very glad that i can do it here in Eastbourne.
“In the other way I’m very sad because I cannot come here and do it again.
“Richrad beat me five times before, quite a lot, I knew Richard was going to be so tough to beat today.
“When a player beats you five times sometimes you don’t know what’s going to be the way.
“How can you manage the situation, how can you find a way beat him? I did so it’s great.”
Gasquet added, “I am very disappointed, it’s a tough one to take. You don’t get an opportunity to win tournaments everyday so it’s hard.
“Feliciano played very well. He has the slice and his game is suited for grass.
“But overall I can be happy with my week and I move on to the next one.”
