Eastbourne finished an excellent second in the Sussex Premier despite a disappointing final day loss at East Grinstead last Saturday.
Jacob Smith’s men travelled to Grinstead knowing they would take second spot after the previous week’s defeat to Roffey, who were crowned champions.
Grinstead won the toss at the Saint Hill Ground and posted a solid target of 276-8 from their 50 overs. There were two wickets each for Joe Pocklington, Daniel Arms and Ben Twine while David Twine and Ethan Guest picked up one each. In reply James Hockley, who finished as the Sussex Premier League’s highest scorer for 2018 with 1021 runs, made 67 and there was a half century for Malcolm Johnson (52). But Eastbourne fell 39 runs short of their target.
Preston Nomads were third and East Grinstead finished fourth. Hastings and St Leonards Priory and Ifield were relegated.
