Future looks bright for Eastbourne second XI

Eastbourne second XI finished their season with a disappointing defeat at relegated Cuckfield.

Batting first, Jon Purdey and Ted Smith made a solid start.

Purdey’s knock of 46 was the top score, though 10 players reached double figures.

There was some hefty late hitting from Joe Barnett, who made 32, but on a great track Eastbourne’s final total of 246 for nine always seemed insufficient.

Eastbourne did pick up two wickets early on, but Lawrence Wisdom came in to score 59 while Gregory eventually went to three figures.

He fell to Ted Smith, as the youngest of the Smiths took three late wickets.

But Cuckfield reached their total with five wickets in hand.

Eastbourne finished in fourth position, with Martyn Garnett ending up as the leading runscorer with 326 at an average of over 80.

Bowling honours were shared between David Twine, Joe Barnett and Harry Mcleod, who all took 17 wickets in the season.

Tomsett said, “With some young players in the side, the future looks bright, not only for this team as many of these players should soon be pushing through to the top level.”
