United come from behind twice to share spoils

Eastbourne United AFC shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Rustington in a game that often drifted into an untidy midfield battle. Rustington went ahead after four minutes, Adam Sargent sliced his clearance to near the corner flag and although palming away the cross and one follow up shot James Bennett was on hand to force the ball home.

Minutes later Steve Stracey tapped home the equaliser but this was quickly followed by a good strike from Steve Kirkham to restore Rustingtons lead.

United then changed their formation to mirror their opponents three at the back and five in midfield and neither side was able to string many passes together.

With the half-time whistle close debutant Paul Walshe gave chase to a hopeful through ball and was taken down by keeper Charlie Gammons.

After an unnecessary amount of gamesmanship that earned Matt Windsor a yellow card Dave Smart’s weak effort from the spot was spilled by Gammons and Callum Holles got to the loose ball first to force in the equaliser.

The second half was scrappy with neither keeper seriously troubled and defences were generally in control. Either side might have won it but a draw was a fair result.
